91 Formula CODE 54?

Ok my ecm is showing a code 54 which is fuel pump low voltage. the fuel pump is brand new and all wiring is getting the correct voltage and the fuel pump relay is getting the proper ohm readings. When the issue pops up the car wont start unless I completely turn the ignition of wait 10-15 seconds then restart. 305 TPI 5 speed. Any Ideas????????????

Code 54, Where Are Youuuuuuu?

Check the oil pressure switch for proper operation.

Because code 54 is not only for the pump.

It’s also for the oil pressure switch, ECM terminal B2, and for the fuel pump relay.

Your having to crank for 15 seconds is consistent with a B2 problem, therefore the oil pressure switch then kicks in and allows your fuel pump circuit to retain voltage.

Re: Code 54, Where Are Youuuuuuu?

ok i just got off the phone with Hawks third gen. Steve said being that the factory harness cannot supply proper voltage at WOT that I'd have to change over to a hot wire kit so the pump can sustain proper voltage. The upgraded 255 pump was installed for up coming mods. However I guess my question for you is what other signs will show if the oil pressure switch isnt functioning properly? And I have the original pontiac tech manual and no where does it state oil pressure switch for the 305 code 54?

Re: 91 Formula CODE 54?

Dont buy the hawks hotwire kit. It complains about the wiring being too small or some mess, but plugs into the factory connector at the fuel tank so the stock wiring is still in place for the last few feet

Test your oil switch by unplugging it. It is meant to bypass a faulty relay as long as oil pressure is above 3psi. Without it, you rely on your relay which may be the culprit

If the code returns with the switch undone, bypass your fuel pump relay by jumpering the terminals between battery power and to fuel pump

If the code returns again with the bypass in place, you have a short somewhere between the relay and the tank

Re: 91 Formula CODE 54?

thanks ill try that out. so if i understand you correctly if i unplug the oil switch and get no fuel the relay is bad and if i get fuel then its the switch itself
