Re: Need help with fan wiring....

The switch is better than constantly on as it will burn out shortly

Use a temp switch for automatic control, summit carries them

Re: Need help with fan wiring....

do you have a carb or tpi/tbi engine?

if you have a tbi/tpi , you can use a switch in your console
with a negative wire and hook these up on your original wiring on the fan relay!

if i remember it hase a 4 wire relay and you must bypas the green/white
wire with a negative wire/switch.

my relay was located on de passenger side behind the headlight!

do you have one or two electric fans?

please tel some more info about your car!

To accomplish that hook the fan relay to the RUN circuit.

The RUN circuit is activated by the key.

One way is to connect the fan relay coil to the output of the GAGES fuse.

i have an 86 firebird trans am with a 350 short block...someone removed the airblower(for exhaust system) and the interior was in shreds when i got it....i bought it for 350$ though so i cant complain.....but wouldnt the gauges fuse only be activated with the lights? and also my speedometer is broken....and i think the RUn wire would be most efficient..

This is true, that’s why I said to use it.

There are many places which to access the RUN circuit from.

One is the GAGES fuse.

Never.

The GAGES fuse powers the gages.

The INST LP fuse powers the instrument lamps.

But a smart person would not run the fan direct off that fuse ; too much current draw through the circuit.
You need a relay

Re: Need help with fan wiring....

Simply grounding the dark green/white ECM wire will set the fan to turn on with IGN power. The fuse is shared with the ALT which receives IGN power from the fuse block

This is true.

That’s why all the smart people which read post 7, read the line:

To accomplish that hook the fan relay to the RUN circuit.

Also, you quoted that line.

He has yet to confirm that he actually has a relay in place.
His OP states
"have an electric fan that is wired to a switch"

Re: Need help with fan wiring....

The Short Answer:

Use a temp switch for automatic control, summit carries them
The Long answer:

Do not simply splice the Fan into a "Switched Power" or "INGITION" or RUN" wire. The Fans usually get a dedicated 25 fuse in the fuse box and splicing into some random "Fat Pink Wire" is not advisable. ( at least check to see if a Fan fuse is present and working into your fusebox, If so than use it as your power source ! ) As it is currently wired you will forget it and the engine will cook. If you wire it to an ING wire (usually pink) than the fan will operate at all times and your 350ci will hardly ever reach operating temp.

Go with a Block mounted sensor,.......

As a reminder, get yourself one of those rocker switches that have an LED light on it, that way if you see no light, then the fan isnt on.

Get a voltimeter and start checking each fuse with the highest amperage. Note down the ones that are HOT with key to ignition. Then put key back to off position. get back under and check if the HOT fuses are now off. If you find one that is off when off, and one that is HOT when switched to ignition, then your good to go.

Come to think of it, I think it would be better to go the relay route. I need to rewire my fan. Forget that post that I posted. It was bad to begin with. Pocket, vettoz, and NINA; you guys gave me a . My next mission, hook up my fan wiring correctly. Thanks guys.

You realise as per you scribble that if he twists the wires together the fan will run full time even with the key off?

Yes but if you don't spent $$ on a relay then you risk burning your car down which could cost more than the relay and a bit of wire

Yup. Thats Y I mentioned to install a toggle switch. I did mention "I highly advise you that this is theeeeeee wrong thing to do, but since you need a free jerryriged job, then here you go."

The guy needed a freebee so I gave him one. I understand the consiquences but all that Im doing is giving advice,,,bad, easy, free and extremely lazy workmanship. I see it this way, he needs the cheesiest way to work his fan right? Well it's his car, not mine. Im sure he's aware of the reprecussions but its his choice. I also mentioned about going the relay route. I gave supported the lazy cheap way, and the time consuming right way.
