Dreaded VATS

Hello,

Need some advice please! Just got a 1992 camaro RS. Previous owner, had problem with ignition reading key, he just put in a seperate fuel pump switch and seperate starter switch.

I am trying to go back to at least using the normal starting method. I have tested the key and its key #12 6040ohm. I made a bypass with a resistance of 6060 1/2 watt 5% (took two to get the range) . Thats in the range but its still not working correctly. I tested the other side of the cable under the dash where I put the resistor on and its making it that far, so it should be making it to the VATS CPU. I looked at the fuse panel and the fuse is there for the vats so at least I know I didnt pop it.

Any suggesions?

Thank you!

DK

Re: Dreaded VATS

Progress today. I was able to get the security light to turn off. Engine still doesnt attempt to start. PO has a seperate igniton button and fuel pump switch, my guess its disconnected somewhere else down the line. I think my resistor may need some tuning, key 12 calls for 6040, mine measures between 6060-6080. I can attempt to start car once, turn ignition off try again and get security light. If I wait 5min it will be off again. The tacometer at least now registers so I think I am making some progress. baby steps.

any thoughts?

Do you know how to pull codes from the ECM? Look for a code other than 12. With a resistance in the VATS circuit of 6080 or thereabouts, I don't think you're getting a code 46, but I would check to make sure. However, since you mentioned that your tach hasn't been registering your engine speed, I would think that your problem is in the ignition system and not the VATS. Keep in mind the simple phrase I learned from an old pro: "No spark, no squirt." This means that your ECM has to be fed an ignition system reference pulse to know the engine is turning so it can tell the ignition and fuel injectors to fire.
