87 IROC with harness hacked up
87 IROC with harness hacked up
the car in question is a 87 IROC Camaro. It is in Turkey and it runs but with some problems.
First of all a little background;
The car as we concluded from SPID and local community gossips
started life as a manual tranny car. But looks like someone cracked it and replaced with a TH700.
Here are the problems;
Speedo is not working. I think it needs a VSS to be attached to the speedo cable outlet of the TH700. I haven't had time to sneak under the car yet.
Tach is another problem. When the ignition key is in ACC it goes rite to 0 but when we pull the key off it climbs to 1500 or so. It reads 2500 on idle when the car is in N or P and 2000 on D or or other gear with brake pedal at the floor.
Engine sound says it is way above factory specs but we are not sure.
Besides engine runs smooth and the car accelerates like an arrow.
When a scanner is plugged it says unable to read or so something but some scanners are reading it correctly.
Sometimes it refuses to start and we unplug the positive cable and wait for awhile replug it then it starts.
So friends, we would like to hear your opinions and expreiences. Also which internet pages to read which books to find, resources etc..
Thanks in advance.
PS : Please help that lonesome IROC thousand miles away from its home

wow what a nightmare you got on your hands lol. Seriously though as bad as it seems its not that bad just needs some attention. I figure well start one problem at a time. Since you already have a bearing on what to do about the VSS as far as to start looking things over well start with the tach i guess. Since you have a scanner have you tried comparing what RPM your ECM thinks the cars running at to the gauge? If they do match up and you dont think its right i would recommend trying a tach that does not run off of the distributor like one of the strobe light tachometers. If something like that is not available you could always look up what gears you have in the rear and calculate the RPM for a given speed for a ballpark estimate though with no speedometer this may require another car with someone else driving to record the speed lol. As far as the no start i wonder if the ECM is "learning" something bad and clearing the memory corrects this. Do you have a check engine light or any stored codes? If there's no light are you sure it works?
