Sticky gas gauge and jumpy temp gauge

This week I've been removing my carpet to check out the floorboards, and then when I started the car up for a quick ride (gotta stretch those wings!) the gas gauge was stuck past full. Before the carpet removal it had worked perfectly.

Also, my temp gauge will jump around in the lower temp range while the car is running. This problem is not so big, because I have an external set of gauges mounted under the dash that show Temp, Oil, and Battery.

I figure the gas gauge is just a grounding issue caused by me when I moved something trying to get the carpet out.

I do have a DVOM and some electrical knowledge, but if anyone has a good place to start, that would be awesome.

There is no common ground under the carpet for the gages.

You might have disconnected the line from the sender to the fuel gage.

Re: Sticky gas gauge and jumpy temp gauge

Strangest thing ever, I started the car up today and the fuel gage went to its accurate position (Only ever fill it with 1/4 tank). Strange, but atleast it's back to normal, for now. Would that imply a short or the float being stuck?

Whatever Floats The Float

The float might have been stuck due to an unknown problem.

Next time it happens try some high-G turns, and high acceleration followed by impending lockup braking.

If that “fixes” it you should take a look at or replace the float.
