Re: service eng light just came on.

if you dont have a key to diagnose it yourself you can run up to autozone and they will pull the code for you for free and tell you what it means. then you can go from there as to what you want to do.

There is a 12 pin connector called the ALDL behind the knee bolster.

The top right 2 pins are terminals A and B.

With the key in the OFF position, connect A & B.

Turn the key to the RUN position.

You should see the
SERVICE ENGINE SOON light flash.

It should will flash once, pause, then flash twice, it should do it 3 times.

That flashing represents code 12 (even tho it flashed 12 three times).

Then it should flash any stored codes in the same manner.

Re: Code Breaker

was confusing for me the first time
when ur in the drivers seat..look by ur right knee and take the cover off that panel
take a paper clip and put one end in the top last one and the one right next to it on the left...
look at the light
it will do a code like 12 would be
*blink (pause) *blink *blink
get it?

Re: Code Breaker

i agree. the only reason i said to go to autozone is if you dont know what the code being flashed means you still have to get a hold of somebody who will interpret the code for you. and if it is something simple and cheap you can just pick it up while you are there.

Its flashing 24. I think that is the vehicle speed sensor. anyone know where it is and is it hard to replace?

Yes it is for the speed sensor.

However ignore that code if the speedometer works properly.

How do you interpret blinking into a number? My "service engine soon light" is on also, and i wanted to try this out. But just trying to figure it all out before i just go for it, Once i connect the pins, and it flashes, how do i figure out what the flash sequence means?

Re: service eng light just came on.

Ok im going to have to try this myself, went up to Autozone to see if they could pull the codes. Just to make it easier on me, and they can only do them on 96's and newer module cars.

someone up there doesnt know what they are talking about. they have to tools to pull codes. on newer vehicles its a thing that they plug in and the code appears on their tool. on older vehicles they use a paperclip or some of the places have a special little key tool that they can put in there and make the service engine light flash.

Ok, its actually pretty easy. Got these 2 flash sequences out. They seem pretty consistant.

one was
Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Pause, Flash (Is code 51)
and the other
Flash, Pause, Flash, Flash (nvm about this one its Code 12)

Now for putting those to a number, i wouldnt even know where to begin.

Re: service eng light just came on.

Oh and for anyone with a 91 Camaro RS, not sure about any other cars, but the OBM or ALDL whatever you want to call it, is located just to the right of the fuse box. Pretty easy to find.

Re: service eng light just came on.

finding out what the code means is pretty easy. you can do it a number of ways. there is a list in the haynes manual (which i recommend having anyway), call up to autozone, or you can google it. code 51 is a problem with the prom. the description in the haynes manual is: defective prom; prom not properly installed; incorrect prom installed; defective ecm.

Re: service eng light just came on.

code 12 is just a check code... it tells you that the ALDL is working properly

Re: service eng light just came on.

Is there any way to clear the code with out a scaner? or does the code just stay in the memory of the cars computer?

Re: service eng light just came on.

unplug the battery for a couple minutes and then plug it back in that should clear the codes in the computer. well at least that worked for me and that is what the haynes manual says to do.
