Intermittent Headlight Outage
Hi, im not new to the site, but new to posting questions...
I have a 89GTA, and I recently had my motor rebuilt, since this my head and interior lights, signals, doorlocks(this is all iv noticed) will go out after having my headlights on for a few minutes. Sometimes they will flicker and I won't have a problem, or they will go out and it take several minutes for them to come on. I replaced my headlight switch(this did fix a delayed driver headlight motor) thinking this could be the problem, but again last nite, it happened again. I'v done a bit of searching and haven't seen a situation exact to mines. I would think if my fusable link(at the starter) was bad, it wouldn't come on at all but on the other hand it seems it could be the cause because of all my accessories going out like that. Being that I can be driving at nite and my headlights suddenly go out, I don't have to say how dangerous this can be as why I'm not driving it at nite. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Intermittent Headlight Outage
I jsut cured a similar problem with headlights going out. It was the relay for the headlights. On my 87 maro it is on the drivers side mounted just in front of the hood hinge. Not sure this relay would cause the interior lights to go out though.
Anyway....................hope this helps.

Re: Intermittent Headlight Outage
Well the switch is a AutoZone switch..but like i said by it effecting my other accessories im inclined to think the problem is somewhere else. Frustrating part of this is, I can't seem to produce the problem, so I have to wait for it to happen. I will see if i can swap appropiate relays to see if that helps.

check the ground from the firewall to the engine, over by the heater hoses.

Re: Intermittent Headlight Outage
I was looking through some wiring diagrams and it looks like all the things you've described could be related to the headlight switch except for the door locks. That's weird. Do the power windows work when the lights go out? If they flicker it sounds to me like you've got a bad connection (or ground) somewhere. You might want to check the connector that your switch plugs into to make sure its not corroded or anything.
By the way I see you are in Raleigh. I've got an extra switch you can have if you want it. It came out of my car and I know it works. I've got too many extra parts laying around.

Re: Intermittent Headlight Outage
After checking out a few things, I was able to produce the problem when messing with the wires going to the headlight relay. Im wondering if its the relay itself or the connector?

Relay Race
The fastest way is to find out is to throw a new relay in it.
But if you’re on a budget you can unplug the relay and make sure the pins on the relay and socket are clean.
Make sure there are no cold joints on the wiring to the socket.
If OK then bench test the relay with a battery and a light bulb.
Knock it around a bit to make sure the light stays steady.
