No high beams and radio shuts off

In my 86 Iroc when I turn the high beams on I get no headlights at all, and my radio shuts off.

Any suggestions?

Did you just buy the car?

The PO might have done something to the wiring.

Anyway the dimmer stalk might need adjusting.

Do you get a good feeling
CLICKwith every pull?

If not, gain access to it at the bottom of the steering column.

When you pull the lever you'll see the moving rod and the switch.

You’ll need a 7mm nut driver.

As you pull the lever you'll see the rod moving.

Adjust the switch so the rod pushes the button.

Yeah, I just did buy the car and it does have an aftermarket radio.

It does seem that the switch is working fine, I get a "click" when I pull back on it.

OK pull the Pull-For-On headlight switch as if you’re trying to turn them on.

Using a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the 16 AWG tan wire from the dimmer switch.

When you operate the dimmer switch what does the meter or test light do?

Then probe the
16 AWG light green wire from the dimmer switch.

When you operate the dimmer switch what does the meter or test light do?

Re: No high beams and radio shuts off

OK, just a little update......So I finally broke down and got a decent mutilmeter. I even bought a new high beam bulb to be safe.

Ive been reading here that the problem might be the headlight dimmer switch at the base of the steering column.

So I get out there today and start playing with the dimmer switch and find the wire harness that plugs into it is wrapped 2 or 3 times around the metal dash framework. One of the wires was skinned and ground out to the metal.

I untangled the mess, fixed up the bad wire and now I got high beams!!
