MY dual Electrical FAN WENT OUT!! Please HELP!!!

Hi everybody. I'm new to this forum but i have visited it couple of times but anyways....just the other day i was driving my firebird 89 350 tpi back to work and i notice that my voltage was low....i also notice this burnt smell. i stopped at gas station and looked if there was anything was wrong and well there was nothing noticeable...so my wife dropped me off and i told her just in case you see anything smoking to stop. So right after like 30 mins she gave me a call that she told me that the car overheated. when i got home i notice that my fan were not working. i notice every time i put the key in and turn it to turn the radio on the fans always went on no matter if there car was cold.

First thing i did was to check my fuse box and well i notice the fan fuse was out.
this happen to me couple of months ago but when i switched out the fuse the fan went back on....but this time it wasn't like this...so then i went on checking the fan motors and one of them was out. in which it was the one on the passenger side. so i switched that out and still it was not working. i did put on the AC but still the fans don't go on. i also switch out the coolant temp. sensor and the fan switch relay and still not working. I'm really getting frustrated because its the only car i got at this moment while i get my other car. Please HELP!!!! Correct me if i did do anything wrong...

Re: MY dual Electrical FAN WENT OUT!! Please HELP!!!

With the dual fan cars - as I understand it - the primary fan is controlled by the computer, the secondary fan is controlled by the fan switch in the pass side head and by the A/C.

If your fan was always running with the key on, then someone has rigged it that way (it's no longer the factory wiring setup), and your kind of on your own to figure it out. You'll have to trace the wiring down and find out where the problem is.

It's very common in these cars to find that the electric fan function has been 'rigged' by a previous owner in the past, because no one ever takes the time to properly fix these issues when things go wrong. Everyone has time to do it over, no one ever has time to do it right.

when you say your voltage is low what voltage is it reading .With the fuse for your fans pulled out is the voltage reading normal. If so you could have a bad fan motor(s). have you tried giving direct power to the fans to see if they work

Re: MY dual Electrical FAN WENT OUT!! Please HELP!!!

are you getting your voltage readings from a volt meter , and is this voltage reading with the car running.
You can switch the fans on with a switch if you want there was a previous thread that showed how to wire it up.....look it up under the` search `title

Re: MY dual Electrical FAN WENT OUT!! Please HELP!!!

you have a big connector below your radiator cap..there is also a relay there close by..they are both to the fans..unplug the connector and look at the wires to it..do the same thing to your relay..the top comes off the relay and you can trigger it to turn on..some of the f bodies I had the connector would get hot and melted the plastic between the wires and they started arcing..that would also make you voltage drop...
