new distributor

Hi i got a 1986 trans am 305 tpi and i jus bought a proform mechanical distributor, and my stock distributor has an electronic advance on it with a 7 pin ignition module. so my question is will it be alright to jus stick with this new mechanical distributor even tho it does not have the hook up to the ignition module or wat would i have to do to make this one work, thanks.

Re: new distributor

You can't make it work. Computer controlled car has to have a computer controlled distributor - period. The computer takes readings from all the other engine sensors and adjust timing on the distributor. If it's not connected, you'll get all kinds of codes, the car will run like crap if it runs at all, you'll have no timing advance or retard at all.

The only way to use a mechanical advanced distributor is to swap to a non-computer controlled carb setup.

Return it, or sell it - you can't make it work.

This is about the only way to do it. You can buy a MSD or Similar distributor for a decent price)

Re: new distributor

Looks like it. However, Autozone/Advance/Oreilly's/whatever carry distributors for 1/2 that price - they're remans, won't come with coil/cap/rotor - but they should be guaranteed - worth looking into.
