JET Chip questions
JET Chip questions
So i have a 91 camaro rs with the 305 tbi. I was looking into getting a JET chip. The question i have is whats the difference in the Stages? Theres 2 stages i can choose from. Stage 1 or Stage 2. the stage one is only 159.99 and the stage 2 is 169.99. So what exactly is the difference between the two?

Re: JET Chip questions
Seriously though - it's a waste of your money. No one has ever gotten any improvement with any 'preprogrammed off-the-shelf' chip - especially for TBI.
Save your cash for better things.

Re: JET Chip questions
Off the shelf Proms (chips) are not HP adders but work with other performance parts. Your question the stage 2 lets you use a 160 deg thermostat without screwing up your ECM functions.

Rear gears will give you the best seat-of-the-pants feel (asuming you have an auto tranny). Exhaust is the first 'engine' upgrade to do. The chips are just a waste of money.
Some folks have custom programmed some chips for their engine mods and came out pretty good - but there isn't anyone out there that can custom program a chip for you that's worth a hoot, unless they have your car, and spend months doing it. The few places that program chips for you have you collect data, email it to them, then they program a chip and send it to you. Waste of time/money. No one can do anygood to any car that doesn't have their assprint in the seat.
But TBI is pretty limited. The stock chip will 'learn' to a degree, but there's a fine line of what mods it will 'learn' to accept, and when that line is crossed, you are SOL. You can do exhaust, the 'free TBI mods', maybe a LT1 cam swap - beyond that, the TBI chip just starts throwing tons of gas at what it 'sees', making the car run really rich and killing any performance from any other mods. You eventually get to a point with mods where the car just won't run at all (I've been there done that).
The other option I've seen some success with as far as TBI goes is swapping in a 350 engine from a Caprice, truck, etc. and getting the 350 TBI chip, knock sensor, etc to go with it - then you have a 350!
