battery relocation questions

ok i am wanting to relocated the battery in my 87 to the spare tire well....

We have everything extra to do this in our shop (Battery boxes switches ect) except the wire the kits come with

I guess my question is...
can I use 0 2 or 4 gauge power wire that you run to rear of car for amp to run my battery back?

I got some Extra JL Audio 4 gauge thats long enough lol

Re: battery relocation questions

4 gauge to me is too small.
0 or 0/2 gauge
also, don't forget to run a large negative wire from the engine to the chassis.

Right. I know what I am doing with it as we have to use them in all of our race cars...

I was just trying not to buy more wire lol I dont want to spend a arm and leg as I already have the on/off switch the box straps ect...

i guess my real question would be is power wire for amp good enough if I get right gauge to run my street/strip car off of?

Re: battery relocation questions

One option maybe to save a few $$$ - Jumper Cables - usually can find nice hefty 20ft jumper cables at WalMart pretty cheap. Or, if the amp wire is sufficient, you can usually buy it by the foot at these audio shops much cheaper than what's prepackaged.

Amp Wire is good enough as long as it's large enough.

We went the cheaper way back in the day and bought welding wire, it was either 0 or 2 gauge, multi-stranded so it was very flexible, and it wasn't that expensive, but that was 9 years ago.

run it and see if that car drags when starting or if the wire starts heating up.
If it heats up or drags, run 2 4 gauge wires.

Re: battery relocation questions

Agreed 2 gauge welding wire would be the way to go. Very flexable it makes life alittle easier when your trying to keep it tight up against the under side of the car. Is this a track car or street car?

Re: battery relocation questions

Is it better to run the wires inside the car under the carpet or outside the car tucked up near the rocker maybe? I just got the BMR battery relocation kit and am buying an Optima Yellowtop battery. I just need the wires and some terminals for under the hood.

Re: battery relocation questions

in the car would protect it from the elements and anything else dangerous (debris, a jacking mistake, etc). There's a great spot right under the door sill plates that'll fit a big piece of wire without issue. Always liked that for doing stereo installs. I've also heard of the stereo guys using pvc piping to protect the 0+ gauge wiring they run underneath the chassis for a bit more added protection

Re: battery relocation questions

Cool! I'd much rather run this inside the car to protect it from outside random potential accidents.. What gauge of wire will fit from inside the car? I know that 0 gauge is the biggest but I'm not sure if it will fit, if it does, all the better. Also, what routing is the best way to do this if routing it by the interior?

Re: battery relocation questions

some find it easier to go on the passenger side, since that's where your starter and power distribution stuff are. I drill a hole behind the kick panel cover, run grommet, and go from there; others have made holes below the heater box (if you've got clearance and room; watch out for the the heater core!)

Re: battery relocation questions

Ahh that makes sense. Yeah the rubber grommet is necessary so the wire does not get pierced over time. Also, if I run an optima yellowtop battery in place of the spare tire and jack with the BMR battery tray kit, do I need to vent the battery to the outside or is it safe since Optima makes sealed type batteries?

Thanks!

Re: battery relocation questions

no need to vent; the yellow top doesn't create gas like the wet cell batteries

Awesome Thanks for the info Dan! You guys wouldn't happen to carry optima batteries at 1A Auto, would you?

Re: battery relocation questions

Why would 4AWG wire be insufficient, if the OE wiring is super thin, like 10 AWG?

Re: battery relocation questions

1) probably not. they require a sealed box to pass tech inspections, this tray is not a sealed box. The tray fits well but i had to add custom brackets to make it solid.. it was flapping up and down over every bump in the road. Now its solid as a rock!

2) i use 2ga wiring and it works fine no heat whatsoever and run the + cable under panels through the interior of the car along the passenger side. it is grounded at the rear frame in the trunk area. since the wire is alot longer than the stock wire, the gauge has to be alot bigger than stock, most people are okay with 2ga, but some go bigger.

that schematic was helpful im relocating my battery this week and was trying to come up with a way to have the 0 g wire running from the battery to the front of the car protected by a 175 amp fuse and not have it blow when the starter that draws over 400 amps is in use without running 2x 0 g wires one fused to the alt and power supply harness and one unfused with a relay to the starter
im going to have a ford type starter relay back by the battery triggered by a jumper wire from the ign switch and a fused loop from the input to output of the relay so that the circuit from the battery to the front of the car is only unfused when the starter is in use do you think i will need a one way diode on the trigger wire because there will be 2 relays on the circuit (the gm relay on the starter and the f$$kd on race day relay in the back
