No Tailights at all...

I recently just got an 1989 Pontiac Firebird and went to replace the bulbs in my tail lights to get them to work. After replacing the bulbs and the reverse light bulb they do not work, not even when the headlights are turned on. I do not know what all kind of wiring has been done i do not know what to check as far as getting them working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: No Tailights at all...

Ive checked all the fuses and none of them are blown or in the wrong spot as i can tell. i feel like it may be a relay or something because the blinkers wont blink they just come on. it alot of crappy wiring done to it but it all still works i just have a bad feeling someone f*@#%ed up somewhere when they were "fixing" it the last time and didnt care to tell me about it.

If the dash light comes on & stays on, or flashes double fast? That is generally an indication that 1 of the bulbs in that circuit is dead.

It can mean at least 1 bulb is not getting power, which the car will only see as a light is out & turn the light on solid or double fast blink. Go to each bulb socket & see if any are not getting power. If you find one, trace that wire back & see where/when it is losing power.

Taillight Fright

Perform the instructions in post 4 for the blinkers, then for the taillights put the lightswitch in the “park” position.

Using a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the brown wire at the switch.

If you have power there open the hatch and unplug the connector located at the left rear of the car.

Probe the
brown wire at the connector.

If you have power there the problem is the wiring between the connector and the tail lights.

If you don’t have power there is a break from the switch to that connector.

Then you just have to trace that short run of wire.

Happy Racing!

Re: Taillight Fright

Well i got my tail lights to working last night. The people i got it from left the ground wire off and just laying under the carpet. Now my problem is that they have it rigged up in the fuse box where when i push the brake pedal the tail lights come on with the hazard lights and the dash lights and the buzzer to let you know your door is open but this only happens when the headlights are off. When they are on it wont do any of this and only my driving lights will stay lit. So if anyone can get me a wiring diagram for the tail lights and blinkers and everything i would greatly appreciate it, or maybe just a whole wiring diagram for pretty much everything i guess. Thanks if you can help.
