Quick and easy VATS question

On a '92 RS, can the VATS system keep the starter from cranking, or does it only disable the fuel?

Re: Quick and easy VATS question

Vats disables the starter by not proving ground to the starter enable relay.

Also disables fuel by not allowing ECM to power the injectors.

So, answer is both.

Re: Quick and easy VATS question

OK, thanks. My brother's car developed a warm/hot start issue that acted like a starter issue, but he noticed the last time it wouldn't crank, the security light was flashing. Looks like we have the VATS to deal with, rather than a starter.

OK - here's a starting diagnosis: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38

Before you grab another starter, go through that - there's alot going on - I've replaced EVERYTHING, and I still have an issue somewhere - sometimes I start, sometimes I just click - but my VATS is taken out of the picture, so for me it's not VATS.

Good Luck!

Re: Quick and easy VATS question

The car has never acted up when I'm around. It's only done it to my brother and it started a couple years ago. He would park, come back a little while later, then it wouldn't crank- just silence. After about 10 minutes the car would fire right up. So then we bought a starter for it, but the problem went away until recently. Well, he noticed the one time that the security light was flashing when he tried to start the car. I'm guessing at this point that the lock cylinder is worn out and occasionally not getting a good signal from the chip in the key. The car has over 200K on it.
