Fuel pump issue

When driving my car it will randomly die. The fuel pump will loose power. At first I changed the fuel pump. I just thought it went bad. I put the new pump in 2 days later its doing the same thing. Sometimes after I sit for a while the car will run again and the pump will have power. What are the things that I need to check to figure out this problem? I have already added another ground for the pump. Its driving me insane. I've had to get towed home twice this week.

The car is an 86 iroc with a 305 tpi setup. Thanks for any help.

Re: Fuel pump issue

I have been having the same trouble with my 1991 Firebird v6. If you find out any way to fix this problem please tell me about it.

It really does make you frustrated. My Firebirds parked right out side the auto parts store right now because it wont start. It will have to stay there overnight sadly. Till I can call the tow company. What happens to your iroc is almost exactly what happens to my Firebird. It will run for a while then all of a sudden just stop while running. That's just not right, I checked the error codes which read.

33. High voltage (low vacuum) at mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor)
43. Low voltage at electronic spark timing circuit
54. Low voltage at fuel pump OR Low voltage at Fuel pump relay OR Output failure at quad driver module.

So I am thinking its a fuel pump problem but am unsure.

You might consider getting a Code reader and see what yours says.

If anyone can help us with this problem that would be great.

Re: Fuel pump issue

Does anybody have the wire diagram for the fuel system wiring?

Wiring diags for almost everything: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Tried replacing the fuel pump relay? Have you checked the fuse in the fenderwell by the battery?

Re: Fuel pump issue

Have you checked or tried changing the fuel pump relay? if that is not engaging and or is bad your pump will turn off as if you turned off the car. I would check and or replace the relay just in case never know.. Its under the hood on the drivers side should be the first one on the left then you have your fan relay right there as well.

Re: Fuel pump issue

Replaced the relay with 2 different brand new ones. Didn't make a difference once it was stalled. 2hrs later the fuel pump kicks back on and I was able to drive home.

Pump Slump

You need to find out where it’s losing power.

This quick-to-build assembly will tell you.

Grab a piece of sheet metal, drill a few holes, mount a few LEDs and you’re good-2-go.

You can use LEDs with built-in resistors so they’re ready to use with 12 volts.

Wire A — Connect to pin A of the pump relay.

Wire D — Connect to pin D of the pump relay.

Wire E — Connect to pin E of the pump relay.

Wire P — Connect at the pump.

Mount the panel in the cockpit.

Double-sided tape will work because it’s a temporary panel.

Now, when you’re driving and the engine cuts out, you merely have to glance at the panel to see where the problem is.

Re: Fuel pump issue

O.k well today I started working on the car again. Its just sat in the driveway for the last 2 weeks. But my other car broke down so I needed a car to drive. So I got my DMM out and started looking at voltages. I found out that I was getteing power to the top of the tank but not to the fuel pump. So I started checking resistances with the pump removed. The pump tested good. I then started removing wires and checking them individually. I could't really find any high resistance but I figured a wire had to be bad where it would build up resistance once running with heat.

So I went ahead and rewired the complete pump section that goes in the tank. All new wires and connectors just to be on the save side. I also redid my grounds on the outside of the tank and made sure that they had a good connection.

Although I did notice where the wires go into the tank that that connection has resistance. I don't know where to get one of those connections at. But it seems like it should be replaced. After I finished everything else I gave it a try and the car finally fired right up. I've been driving the car around today and so far so good.

If anybody knows where I can get one of those connectors it would be appreciated. Its the black plug that goes in through the top of the tank. Its only held on with a crimp washer on the inside of the tank.

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions and help.

Re: Fuel pump issue

Look through this online catalog and see if you can find that connector. If you find it, write down the part number and check with any local auto parts store and see if they can order it for you. These are all Dorman/Motorite parts and just about every parts store orders their products (since very few other folks make these things)...
