Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

Hey All! Posted this up in the car audio board with no results. Thinking maybe I posted in the wrong place.
I have an '86 IROC that I am in the process of installing a remote start alarm in. I am looking for a tachometer signal wire behind the instrument cluster, in the intrest of saving my underhood from even more clutter. Any one know what color/location it is?
Car is an '86 IROC TPI auto.
Thanks!

Sounds Remote

It’s White, it goes to one of the connectors in back of the dash.

Of course once you believe you’ve found it, you can verify with an ohmmeter.

Happy Racing!

Thank you!! I really appreciate it! Plain white wire, no trace... Got it!

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

On my 1990 gta there are to connectors with wires to them. One connector is brown, the other is gray.
On the brown connector there is a white wire and it is lables to #1 not #7.
What should the reading be when I meter up to it (at start up, and idle,
and accelerate)?????
Dont' want to splice into the wrong wire.
Looking to do the same thing for my remote start.
I have reservations about going to where it connects to the coil.

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

did we ever resolve this? Having issues with my clifford not getting a clean signal and its starting to **** me off, ive tagged the white wire at the coil (going to the tach not the icm) as well as at the cluster, tach signals are in AC but i cannot get a clean consistent AC signal to my remote start which kills it with an over rev or under rev ( DEI makes their stuff shut down the sequence if idle drops too low or rises too high)

Biggest problem is that the singal jumps from 3-4 volts AC just sitting still at idle, no rpm change visible by the tach or audible by engine noise, ran virtual tach which over ran my starter and also tried voltage sense which didnt crank long enough....oh and to add to my attempts i soldered into the tach wire, at both locations (t-taps dont play well with AC)

Ive installed god knows how many remote starts (DEI at that) and ive never run into this type of a situation......

soooooo ideas?

Why do you need the tach wire for an alarm?

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

It's for the remote starter. It lets the remote starter know when the motor starts.

Close, it watches the tach signal to ensure there's no over or under revving, there is also the option for voltage sense, or virtual tach which didn't respond well to the cold weather here in washington

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

im wanting to add a remote starter to mine, however i also wanted to add something one of my friends done who also has a KITT replica, hes tapped into the cruise control so he can remotely rev the engine which is really cool, you should see some peoples faces at the car shows we've been too !

so if i put a remote starter in, it starts the car, but then if i rev the engine with the other remote will it just cut out ?

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

If you use almost any DEI remote start they use the tach wire or the virtual tach to monitor the rpms, too high or too low and the remote start deactivates because the unit sees a fault. How he tapped into the cruise control circuit is beyond me, between engaging the cruise in park and what function the remote start does to actuate it. Idk. It seems like a pretty pointless thing to me, I generally show my system and car off at car shows not hide and rev my motor with a fob

Revolution Solution

You can use one channel on the key fob with a relay.

One set of contacts in the relay can open the park contacts, while another set of contacts is tapped into the accelerate portion of the cruise switch.

I recommend a rev limiter in case you lose remote control.

Happy Racing!

Re: Tach wire behind inst. cluster / remote start?

he just tapped into the 12v wire i think, and its a momentary fob so it revs as little or as much as you want to hold the button, just to give it that knight rider vibe ? only thing is he doesnt have the remote start on his yet, he was just messing around one day and realised how to do the remote rev
