I have an 86 firebird and randomly the headlights just stopped working tonight. They flip up when I turn the headlight switch on but the lights don't come on... I just replaced the radiator fan today, I dont think that had anything to do it seeing as they stopped working as I was driving with them on, I figure it's not a switch issue because they do flip up only when it's in the headlight on position. Has anyone had this problem or know where I can start to check this out?? Thanks in advance

try messing around with the headlight switch, flipping the switch back and forth... or you can look up the wiring diagram and with a jumper cable check to see if your switch is at fault or something further downstream... the easiest method is to get yourself a 12v test light and check various points in your headlight harness for juice...

 

Ok so I finally found some time to look up the wiring diagram and it looks like the lo-beam, hi-beam, and hi-beam indicator all go through the headlight dimmer switch. Now the guy that owned the car before me wired up a switch below the steering wheel that controls the operation of the high beams, what I'm trying to figure out is if the "headlight dimmer switch" is the actual switch that he wired up/ the one that would normally be on the turn signal lever or if that switchs wires go back into what is considered the headlight dimmer switch.

 

the way it sounds is that he wired into the headlight dimmer switch for hi lo beams. i am guessing the switch he rigged into it went bad.. your lights would still pop up, but not turn on ,if thats the case. the headlights use quite a bit of power. if you dont have a heavier duty switch to handle it. the switch burns out inside. i would go through and wire it back the way it should be and get a new headlight dimmer switch.
