92 Firebird Gauges into an 82 Firebird
Ok... I'm sure this has been done before but I'm having little luck finding technical info on it. I thought it really wouldn't be this hard too. I have an 82 Firebird that I am wanting to get rid of the gauges in. I bought a 92 Firebird ster to take it's place. So, I put it in and EVENTUALLY got the lights to light up. I say eventually because I'm also going with LED's and it was a pain to get the lights all turned to where they'd come on. Anyways, none of the gauges work. I've searched for a pinout and cannot seem to locate one for each. I'd like to see if anyone has a pinout for the 82 and the 92 so I can repin this to make it work? Also, if anyone has done this I'd appreciate any advise you can give.

The one place you'll have issues is the speedo - 1992 is electronic and 1982 is cable driven. Not sure if it's a simple matter of swapping out the electronic unit on the tranny tailshaft and running the wiring, or if you'll have to incorporate a VSS box somehow.
Or wait - maybe all the 'bird stuff is electronic - on the Camaro there were dial guages and thus the difference - some Berlinetta's and 'Birds had digital stuff - so I dont know.

Re: 92 Firebird Gauges into an 82 Firebird
Yeah, I've done the research and it appears that I'm going to need to replace the VSS in the tranny with an electric one then run a wire to the buffer box and do some wiring from the buffer to the speedometer. That much seems to match what I'm experiencing. What I handn't counted on was the panel itself not matching up. First, the lights didn't want to come on (leds) which turned out just to be me needing to twist them 180 degrees, then when they came on the whole thing was "goofy". Finally got some of that figured out. But what really is baffling me are the gauges. NONE of them are reading anywhere near accurate. I can attribute some of it to the fact that the gauges are in different locations between the two clusters. So, that would make sense in retrospect I guess. So, I'm thinking I'm going to need to repin the C1 and C2 connections to match the new 92 Firebird unit. I'm guessing I'll at least need the gauge pinout for the 92 but it would make it easier if I had the one for the 82 also just so I can see if there is anything else I may be missing (extra ground, wiring, etc.) and rule that out. All info I have on both cars is as follows.
My car 82 Firebird with a 350 and an auto transmission
Car Cluster came from 92 Firebird with 350 and auto transmission.
I'm guessing the printed circuit on the new cluster is ok, however I'm thinking I may have ruined my old one (82 gauges) in the process of pulling it out and putting it back in. These things get a bit brittle with age it seems.

Well, I found the one for the 86-92.... I'm guessing it's correct. Now I need one for the 82 Firebird to be able to compare it.

Re: 92 Firebird Gauges into an 82 Firebird
Ok, I found out about a great little tool to remove the pins in the swap.... A plain old ordinary hair pin..... Came across the idea from someone else and sure enough, works better than anything else I was trying... Cheep tool too.

Re: 92 Firebird Gauges into an 82 Firebird
Oh.... Does anyone have the pinouts for the color codes that correspond to the 82 Dash Gauge Cluster? I'm needing them to fix this mess.... Evidently I'm getting something totally screwed up and cannot figure it out..
