fuel pump wires

86 firebird w 2.8/the wires running into the tank after they come throught the car body. There are 3/1red 1/black 1 gray.or so that is what they looked like.for me to try to see if this pump is good and not a wireing problem I want to run power into the pump as close to it as I can.I looked at wireing diagrams and they don't even have these colors on them.not the gray one and I see orange insted of red.do I conect the red battery to the red wire going to the pump and the black battery to the black wire going to the pump and figure the gray gose to the fuel gauge?Anyone know about this. Also is this safe to do this close to the tank?

Re: fuel pump wires

I can't member but I know that the dead obvious one that looks like it should be the hot is the fuel gauge, as I just did the movie bomb trick when doing mine n just guessed n cut the most likely wire

Which would mean the red or pink one is more then likely the fuel gauge [the ones Id guess to cut first], black will be ground always, which must mean the gray is it but it is 5am here so mull it over before you cut.........
