83 Camaro, won't start

Hi guys,I have an 83 z28 that I have recently done a Crossfire injection to Carburetor swap in. Finished a couple weeks ago and it started everytime on a dime. Recently, after throwing on a new Edelbrock 600, I went to turn the car over and it appeared that the starter had gone bad. I pulled and replaced the starter because judging by the look of the solenoid and the gear teeth, it was time for a new one. After the new starter was in, when I turn the key to the start position, it may crank a few turns but power is being surged and won't turn the starter fast enough to start the engine. I thought it was the battery so I threw in the new one from my truck and the same thing is happening. When the power surges to whatever source is draining, I still have full power to every other component in the car. A couple of days ago I went to crank it and my positive cable where it meets the battery began to smoke, as did my solenoid. Then, with the key in my hand and out of the ignition, the starter gear was still in contact with the flywheel and slowly rotating the engine. I'm thinking either a bad starter,(local shop only sells remanufactured starters) or a bad ignition switch. Would an ignition switch cause such a drain though? Any input would be very helpful.
