Where to take car for electronics work
Hello all; need some advice here.
My 92 Z28 has some really funky stuff going on with the electronics. It started with the fuse for the door locks repeately frying. I replaced it over and over again. The last time I put a new one in, smoke started coming out of the door, and the power lock button melted. Needless to say, since then, the fuse has stayed empty. I am currently without power doors, windows (I'm pretty sure this is the motors as well), horn, lighter, power hatch, and reverse lights. I am ready to get this fixed and think that troubleshooting/re-wiring is out of my realm as I don't even have a garage to work in. I'm not sure at all what the best type of shop to take this issue to would be. Any suggestions? I'm leaning toward the dealer, just because they probably would know the car the best and would be least inclined to do a hack job, but wonder if a stereo/alarm shop would be better equipped and less pricey? Any advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

I'd seek out a automotive electrics place - locally here there is a guy that does nothing but automotive electrics - Randy's Auto Electrics.
Or contact any local car club, get opinion from them on who does it.

Did the stuff fry as soon as you put the fuse in, or only when you would hit the door lock switch? If it's the later, it's probably a bad ground. Door locks need quite a bit of amperage to operate and if you have a bad ground when you hit that switch, the power has to go somewhere. You could start by checking out the door lock relay which is right under the drivers side kick panel (where the hood release lever is). Just follow the wires and make sure it's properly grounded.
