Coolant Temp Sensor

Could someone recommend me where to purchase a 180 degree coolant temp sensor? I've called Napa and Carquest and both have nothing more then the standard factory temp sensor. My engine builder recommends me to get a 180.

Re: Coolant Temp Sensor

the coolant tempt sensor doesnt do anything but tell the ECM what temp the car is running at. what he probably ment is you need a 180 degree fan SWITCH. on your 91, itll have 3 "sensors" for the coolant system. theres the temp sensor in the intake, that sends the temp to the ECM. then theres the coolant gauge temp sender, on the driver side. then theres the fan switch, on the passanger side that turns the fans on and off.

Do a search for "alternative fan switch" and you'll find a thread with part numbers for all the different rated fan switches.

One question about the ECM. I'm having a FAST EZ system installed which from my understanding doesn't use the cars ECM. I'm not sure if that's a fact or not, nor do I know how that affects the cars sensors.

Re: Coolant Temp Sensor

the fast system is ment to adapt fuel injection into older orginally carbed cars. so it uses its own ecm, and wiring harness. the stock ecm and harness will be useless. most of the stock sensors wont be used. if it a new (not second hand) system, itll come will all the sensors you need (replacing the stock ones or just doing away with them)

Yes, its new. The system was sent directly to the engine build so he could put on the crate motor. I'm guessing I'm still going to need that 180 thermostat then? I saw one from Hypertech that was about $13, I'm guessing that's what I'm needed then to turn the fan on earlier?

Re: Coolant Temp Sensor

the thermostat is what opens at whatever temp you get to allow coolant to flow to the radiator. it allows the engine to get to operating temp quicker. a 180 thermostat is about the lowest you want in a street driven car. but what you need is a different fan switch to turn the fans on sooner. there thread on here that have part numbers for different temps. or you can get an adjustable one. or just get an aftermarket fan controller.

Re: Coolant Temp Sensor

depends on the motor, but one that turns the fans on at 200 instead of the stock 230 would be an improvement. again, you dont want one that turns on too low, it takes the engine longer to get to operating temp.

I think I'm going with one from Jet Performance that's set at 195 for the fan switch along with a 180* thermostat, Does this sound good?

Mine turns the fan on at 205. I think it was meant for Corvettes but I cant remember, that was several years ago.
