Fan Sensors/relays and Temperature Sender

So my temperature sender was working for awhile ti'll I had an overheating problem due to a radiator cap. Ever since I haven't been getting a temperature reading. Is it possible the temperature sender is dead or could it just be the wire and or gauge? Last time I checked grounding out the wire jumps the gauge still but does that mean that it couldn't be the wire or gauge?

Another issue. My fan doesn't work anymore and I'm, not sure exactly why.
It use to turn on with the ac button and well that's how I used it. Now it won't come on and btw is the ac button suppose to turn on the fan?

Anyway I wanted to wire up the whole temperature sensor to ecm so it automatically turns itself on when needed. My problem is I don't know which sensor to use.

My car use to have a thermostat which had a two prong connector which I'm guessing when to the ecm. Was that what turned on my fan? Or was it some sensor that plugs into the passenger side of the engine?

I'm curious to what each are for and which one if not both do I need?
My mission is to get my temperature sender working again and to get my fan going only when its needed.

Not totally sure if my fan is dead or not unfortunately.

Re: Fan Sensors/relays and Temperature Sender

I just found the what I believe the ac/fan fude was blown. I replaced it and it blew 2 more times and the third time it worked fine. Whats up with that?

Anyone else ever have that problem?

Re: Fan Sensors/relays and Temperature Sender

You should invest in a seperate fan controller, I run a Flex-a-lite controller and it's been the best thing - 5+ years old now, works flawlessly. Fully adjustable, provisions for A/C and manual on switch, easy easy install, and best part, probes the radiator fins so no coolant loss from always changing fan switches. Mine is the $100 model, some cheaper, some more - just depends on the bells and whistles.

BTW - temp sensor for guage on driver side head between #1 and #3 spark plugs - has a single green wire.

The Coolant Temp Sensor was the 2-wire thing at thermostat - tells ECM what op temps are, and ECM adjusts timing and fuel accordingly, as mwell as turning on the fan. Fan switch in pass side head between #6 and #8 spark plug, is a back-up to the ECM control of the fan (single fan models), or switches on secondary fan (dual fan models).

Seperate controller gets rid of need for fan switch, and removes ECM control of the fan.
