Tach wires

Can you hook up the stock tack directly to the distributor if the engine is not run by the computer?

Stock tacho is run directly from the dist ( white wire on HEI cap or white wire on coil in small cap dist) .
Tacho reading has no connection to the computer which gets it's revs readings from a different source.

I spliced into the tach wire behind the instrument cluster on the stock harness.My car has no computer either but I didn't have any issues.I have an HEI though so it has a dedicated tach feed off of it.
