Trunk hatch electronics issue

After replacing the entire hatch "pull-down" mechanism the trunk still won't function properly. It did pull the hatch shut the first time after the install so I think it isbe a problem with returning the motor to its original position. any ideas on what's wrong/how to fix it would be greatly appreciated..

Re: Trunk hatch electronics issue

check if the motor is hot. if so, it maybe the trunk release relay. it should be next to the mechanism. look around for a relay near the trunk release.

Re: Trunk hatch electronics issue

Anybody have a color wiring diagram for 84 to 86 Trans Am? I would like to see a diagram/schematicall wiring not just the one line "power wiring"diagram. There are 4 wires going to the hatch relay. I do not have a rear wiper or washer on the car. How does the hatch contact work? It does not appear to carry voltage or current, so how does it make hatch motor close the hatch. All help is appreciated. All ws fine until 2 weeks ago and I am the original ownersince 85.
Thanks

Cant help you with the color diagram or the relay.

I have been working on my hatch pulldown and from what I've found is that the latch itself has a switch (red arrow in the picture) that is activated when the hatch comes into contact with it. This switch, when pressed, makes the motor pull the assembly down thus pulling the hatch itself down. At the end of the "pull" the motor should click. This is reversing the motor to allow it to push up. When the latch is unlocked or released, the switch is also released and this activates the motor to push the assembly back up. And again at the end of the "push" there should be a click.

The flat rectangular contact area at the top of the trunk is for the center brake light on the hatch. Doesn't have anything to do with the hatch pulldown.

Hope that helps...

Re: Trunk hatch electronics issue

Thanks for info on high hatch brake light contact plate for the hatch. I tried to figure out what the plate was for. I took apart the rear inside trim on the actual hatch and saw 2 unknown red wires going somewhere , for which there was no description in wiring diagrams.
Also thanks for picture of the lever. One must have to be a dective to figure out hatch stuff.
Many thanks, I'll see if I can get hatch to close again!

PS to moderators. It appears the hatch wiring and physical issues are a popular topic. I see Lonsal has a physical repair procedure link I copied. Does all this info deserve an electrical sticky for neophyte "mechanics" including the real wiring story?

Do you have a wiring diagram or any information for getting the rear hatch motor to operate?

Re: Trunk hatch electronics issue

On the forum are other threads that have wiring info. However they are one line diagrams and I thought severly lacking in helpful color coding. Member /moderator Lonsal has a complete mechanical rebuild procedure for hatch lock that you need to find.
www.austinthirdgeneration.org has wiring diagrams.
Good luck, others may be able to help you.

That little black lever on hatch lock was my problem. I pushed it down and motor operated hatch downward. I let it go after motor reverser clicked and the hatch lock went back up. All is working fine now. Very much thanks. Your picture should be a big help to others too!

Re: Trunk hatch electronics issue

Sorry I haven't had time to answer this particular post. I've been out in the shop making some more of the guides for these pull-down units.

I'm sure I've answered every possible problem with these pull-down units at least two dozen times already and the cool thing is ALL those posts still reside here on TGO. Just do a little research by searching on my login name "lonsal". Gotta run, I have a dozen customers waiting on their guides or hatch repair kits.

Have you checked the fuse in the fuse panel under the dash?
