Ignition Tone
I rewired my car after an engine swap and when I insert the key, some of the lights come on and the ignition tone stays on and doesn't go off until I remove the key. What would cause this?

Re: Ignition Tone
mine does the same thing sorta. itll blare the same anoying constant tone if the key is in the run position without having the drivers seat belt buckled. i havent done anything to fix it because i ALWAYS wear myseat belt, and its a good way to get anyone else who drives my car to do the same.

Re: Ignition Tone
I gather this is how it's supposed to work - key reminder and seat belt reminder. Guess in the 80's they couldn't muster a nicer chime sound like a modern car, just that noise that make hulk smash

Re: Ignition Tone
when the car was stock it would ding and not have a constant buzzer. and it would only ding for a few seconds on turning the key then stop.

Re: Ignition Tone
Ahh, mine just blares away until you take the appropriate corrective action, like switching off the headlights, removing key etc. Have read other similar complaints - maybe the buzzer module semi-fails in a particular way over time.

Re: Ignition Tone
that what ive gathered. mine will do the constant buzzer with the headlights and leaving the key in with the door open too. i kinda like it the way it is.

Re: Ignition Tone
Lets get into buzzer trivia here - you get a constant buzzer for headlights or key left in, but a modulated/cut off buzz for seat belt? Mine's the same, but I have no seat belt function, not even the wiring as far as I've ever seen. Replaced the belts years ago, didn't see any.

Re: Ignition Tone
i dont think its a sensor in the buckle part, but a sensor on how far the belt is pulled out. if i turn my key on. i can just pull on the belt and once its extended a certain amount the buzzer cuts off.
Re: Ignition Tone
There are two different buzzers... The early version buzzes, the later version dings. Both versions can just be unplugged from the convenience center, or swapped to the other version.

Re: Ignition Tone
mine went from dinging(stock) to buzzing(after carbed engine swap) without changing the buzzer.
Re: Ignition Tone
That still doesn't change the fact that GM used two different buzzers. I want to say the buzzers are blue, and dingers are black. Unplugging the buzzer and leaving it disconnected stops the noise and I want to say it kills the seat belt warning light, iirc.
Edit: There are 5 pages in the shop manual covering the audible buzzer. I'm too lazy to scan them in, but they're in the electrical section. Look in the electrical diagnosis table of contents under "Warnings and Alarms: Chime".

Re: Ignition Tone
I replaced my whole belt assemblies including retractors, with the closest thing I could find over here, just can't recall any wiring. The original worn out ones never caused a ding/bong/buzz, wonder if it was an option?
So - there were two kinds of buzzer. You learn something every other post!

Re: Ignition Tone
mines got the black box, but buzzes. i like the way it works now. it makes you put on your seat belt to shut it up (or turn off the lights or whatever).
