ECU Computer questions
Hey I am new to this website. I am told that ODB-II didn't start until 1996 but i can see that my 82 Firebird has the 12 prong plug for engine diagnostics. I would like to buy one of the displays that shows active engine data. These devices say that they support ODB-II but then what about my car? The plug appears that it would fit. If someone could please enlighten me that would be great.

Re: ECU Computer questions
your car is OBD1
OBD2 has a 16 pin connector
if you have a laptop computer, you can buy or make an ALDL cable, download the right software and scan it.

ALDL Cables are available here for less than most other places.

Re: ECU Computer questions
Are you looking for a chip, a scanner or just to be able to see some engine data? There really is not a whole lot to "see" on an 82. If you are having some issues and need a scanner to be able to monitor data Inovia (i think its spelled correctly) makes a nice consumer scanner that would give you the infoo you need. Will set you back $250 - $300 though. Unless you absolutely need Id save my money
