Help identifying connectors
Hi,
Ive gone from a 92 TBI motor to a carbed non factory motor. All of the old ECM wiring is gone. Ive got most of it sorted, but have a few connectors left over. Im pretty sure the stuff I still have left to hook up is:Oil pressure, Water temp, speedo, alternator. Just need help identifying these connectors. Im also not sure whether the oil and water temp senders are where the would be on the original motor.

Re: Help identifying connectors
pic 2 is your vss connector to the transmission, pic 3 is the coolant temp sender to the dash gauge not sure what number 1 is usually the gauge wire for the coolant gauge is green.

Re: Help identifying connectors
Thanks for the reply, I have downloaded all the drawings from Austin3rdgen before. The problem I have, is the no stock motor. Im assuming I need a converter on my TH400 to convert the mech signal to an electronic 1? Pic 4 maybe the coolant sender connector, but it is on the passenger side, my sender is on the drivers. Pic 5, Im assuming, is the oil pressure wiring? I cant seem to find the sender on the block?

Re: Help identifying connectors
#5 is coil power wire and tach lead. with the th400 to get you speedometer to work you need to get a speed sensor to hook to the vss / buffer wiring http://www.tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/7586
the oil sending unit could be in the back of the top of the block behind the intake or above the oil filter if the provisions are there. #4 pic 1 could be a coolant sensor plug those and the knock sensor plugs look similar. since this is a carb motor you might want to rewire the fuel pump circuit so the ecm is out of the picture.

Re: Help identifying connectors
Great! Im on the case with the speedo drive, that looks fine. The coil and tach I can deal with, running an msd, and different distributor, so that circuit needs sorting anyway. Cant find the oil pressure sender? Its a Dart block, so Ill check their site. I take it. I need a sender for the coolant gauge AND a sender to operate the fan? Oh, just found a green wire with a female spade connector

Checked with Dart, found the oil sender position, but it is plugged? I wonder what the previous owner did?

Re: Help identifying connectors
for the replacement coolant sensor look at rockauto.com I believe the ship international. looking at the wiring schematic the coolant fan wiring is isolated from the ecm the sender should be green with a white stripe. the sender grounds at a specific temp and the relay than sends power to the fan. or you can buy one on this link for cooler on temp, or buy a derale 16749 or 16759 for adjustable fan control. if there is a provision for the sender I would use it. if if was plugged it would be with a pipe plug. you didn't mention if you are using a mechanical or electric fuel pump. if its electric I would rewire the fuel pump relay to turn on with the ign in the accessory position and toss the ecm.

Re: Help identifying connectors
Im using an Aeromotive electric pump, I know Ive got to do some rewiring of this circuit, including the power to the pump, as its current draw is higher. Post 4.pic 1 does have a green and white wire. Im just getting my head around the fact I need a cable for both the gauge, and the fan circuit. If the green and white is for the fan circuit, thats ok. The manifold does have a sender in it, but uses a 2 pin socket rather than a single

Re: Help identifying connectors
the coolant sensor in the manifold should look like the the attached link. It send the coolant temp reading to the ecm.

Re: Help identifying connectors
Thats the 1! Looking at TPI parts store, the green wire with a spade connector is for the gauge, and the green/white wire with round plug is for the fan circuit. Where it gets confusing, is they show the gauge sender as a round one?! Im assuming then, I will need a sender on each side of the block? There is provision on the other side, Or use the port on the manifold? As long as its in the water passage it doesn't matter?

Re: Help identifying connectors
on tbi it is different than tpi. I believe the fan switch on yours was on the rh head in the back the gauge is the lh head in the front. just a guess that for a gauge the best reading is in the head gm has done this for years but any coolant passage will work for these sensors.

Re: Help identifying connectors
The cable for the fan switch is around the RH head at the back like you said. So, Im going to move the sender from where it is now (the other side) and that will take care of that. The other side (LH) is where the cable for the gauge is (green wire with spade connector) I checked Ebay, and there is a sender with a spade connection. I will fit that here. The one on the manifold, I will just ignore. I will also get an oil sender. The problem Ive had, are non standard parts, and the fact the previous owner, didnt seem to like having working gauges?! It would have been a lot easier, if the senders were there in the first place
