Temp gage not working & other issues

On my 83 Z28, I removed the ecm and associated wiring and I have some questions now. Did this disable my temperature gage? My original one was broken when I bought the car and I replaced the gage from another instrument cluster and it still doesn't work. I'm going to wire in an aftermarket gage for now.

The Choke light is on and I was told that's an indication the alternator is not working. I checked voltage at the battery with the car running and it looks like the alternator is working. I can't remember the exact voltage right now, but it was somewhere around 14volts. Is there anything else to check?

The brake light is on and I'm wondering if that's because I removed the ecm too. The PO swapped out the rear end with one from an 88 IROC and I've bled the system pretty good...should I use the proportioning valve from the IROC too? I also had the center console apart so I'm also wondering if I might have bumped a connector the wrong way...will check that tomorrow.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ECM Mayhem

The ECM has nothing to do with the temp sensor or brake lights.

Therefore using a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe both sides (one side at a time) of the STOP HAZ fuse.

Is there power on both sides?

You can test the temp gage.

With the engine OFF, but the key in the RUN position, ground the sender wire, then look at the temp gage.

If the gage is good it will peg to the hi side.

You verified the alt is good so pay no attention to the choke symbol.

Re: Temp gage not working & other issues

I totally forgot about this post. Thanks for the check on the fuse, I have my Fluke meter at home right now and will check it as soon as I can.

I found a blown fuse and once I replaced it, the Choke light went out. I'm not sure what fuse it is, almost all the labels are worn off.

The brake light is still on and I'm thinking I might need to check the parking brake. If the car is like my Burb the brake light comes on when I set the parking brake. I had the console loose in the car so I'm thinking I might have bumped the switch or something.
