What are these things for?

I was tinkering around in my car today and found two things that I have no clue what they are for. First one is a wire with a plug inder the dash coming out of the fuse box and the second thing is a plugin beside the center console. Here's some pics.

Re: What are these things for?

First one looks like a clutch safety switch connector. Second one is the diagnostic connector.

I may be wrong but it's an automatic transmission, wouldn't those only exist on manuals?

Why do you think autos will only start in P and N?
Maybe your car has connectors for both auto and man trans

Re: What are these things for?

Good point, so what difference would it make if I plugged it into whatever it goes into?

Re: What are these things for?

autos only start in N with the brake depressed. I'm not sure but maybe it's the one off the brake pedal switch?? Heavy pink does seem to indicate PN or clutch neutral switch

Re: What are these things for?

What color are the wires on the top picture? Looks Purple/Yellow to me, but my monitor's colors are usually off.

Re: What are these things for?

Well, looking at the wiring diagrams for the interior, the only purple wires are for the following:

Wiper Washer switch assembly -> Wiper Motor Module (This one also has a yellow wire)
Clutch / Auto Shifter Selector switch -> Starter Solenoid
Blower Motor Resistor -> Blower Motor & Blower Relay

None of them originate from the Fuse box, however...

This has given me two possible ideas of what it could be for

When I turn on my window wipers I can only use the high and low setting, the setting before that where you can twist it and it has the long white stripe to control the speed has no effect and won't turn on the wiper. I don't even know if they were originally meant to do that but I see no other function for it.

Other thing it could be is that when I press the spray button for the windshield it doesn't work, there isn't even any noise at all to signal that it's on.

Re: What are these things for?

That's it. Oh so it would be controlled by a relay in the engine bay?

The auto trans will start in Neutral whether or not the brake is depressed, provided that the NSS is adjusted properly... The brake switch is NOT tied into the starter system in any way, shape or form. Heavy pink wires are generally for the ignition, power windows, and anything else using high current that is ignition controlled (as in OFF when the key is in the OFF position).

The connector with the purple and yellow wires is the clutch switch. If you were to remove the harness from the dash, you will find connectors that have nothing attached due to the fact that GM made the harnesses universal based on other options being installed or not (cruise control, hatch defrost and/or release, and a couple others I don't know WTF they do). GM would not have spent the time or money making each individual harness for each individual car and then having to swap them out when the wrong harness was put in a car.

Most likely, OP, if you don't even have the WASH mode on your wipers, the control board in the motor housing is bad (PART of the black cover, which gets replaced as an assembly when the pulse board is bad), since the WASH function is a side function of the DELAY mode.

Ok , so , let me get this right . You bump a 2 year old thread , making some weird "Yaaaaaay for old threads" noise , and demand the thread be locked ???? Why did ya bump it at all if ya have some issue with old threads Just to demand it locked

I think they oughta keep the thread unlocked and lock you , instead
