Code 12- Bad computer?

Hey all,
My '89 305 T/A randomly shut down on me the other day while driving. Upon trying to start it up, it turns over but doesn't ignite. I can smell fuel, so lack of fuel is not the issue, but I'm getting as constant error code 12 (even after the initial 3 times it flashes). What does it mean "no reference pulse to the ECM"? Does this mean I need to replace the ECM, or something else? Please help! Thanks!

Re: Code 12- Bad computer?

When you pull codes from the ecm they repeat. So if your getting only code 12,the computer has no trouble codes stored.

It takes fuel and spark to start, so check that your getting fuel at the engine. You could be smelling fuel because of a leak somewhere, tank, damaged line, fuel filter, etc. Check for spark too. When your engine died, did it immediately stop or kinda sputter to a stop like if you ran outta gas?
