sensor questions for mods

I am wondering how to bypass some sensors, like the knock sensor because I am wanting to put timing gears instead of the timing chain, the A.I.R. pump i want to get ride of and install headers, what sensors can I get rid of or bypass and still have it pass inspection. Also wanting to completely get rid of the A/C unit to unclutter the engine compartment. Would this be advisable?

Engine sensors are there for a reason ;
Knock sensor for example stops your engine blowing up
Most relate to engine operation, delete them and your engine wont run right

Depends what your state requirements are; some will defect you just for removing stuff

AIR and Ac you just unbolt and install delete pulleys in their place

Re: sensor questions for mods

I live in NC. If the older cars (before computer vehicles) didn't have them, then why would it cause the car to "blow up"? Talked to a fellow at a recent car show and he told me, he unplugged his and it runs fine. Then how do they beef up cars (some radically) or even do engine swaps and by pass the pc's?

Re: sensor questions for mods

if you don't want all the sensors, just pull the harness and convert to carb. FI is designed to run with all its sensors in place, most new cars have far more sensors than ours do. While you can unplug certain sensors and have the car run, it does not mean it will run well. As far as passing tests and removing emissions equipment usually you have to find someone to look the other way

Re: sensor questions for mods

I will check into that. A friend suggested that also, would love to add a tunnel ram on it w/ 2 fours.

I think that would be a little much for a 305, would look cool though...

The computer that controls all the engine operation gets it's info from the sensors.
No or wrong info and the computer doesn't know what is going on.

In the case of the KS it looks for engine knock; if it sees it it retards the timing to stop it happening.
Google engine knock or pinging to see what it does to a engine

Because they get custom tunes on the computer to allow for the engine mods; they just don't go unplugging things and putting them in the bin
Only way to "bypass" the computer is as noted above ,is to fit a carb

He had to do more than just "unplug the knock sensor," since timing will retard by 4 degrees simply with an unplugged sensor.
