Berlinetta Nightmare

I am knee deep restoring my 86 berlinetta and I have come across several wiring problems.

1. Turn signals do not work I have tried to figure out if the light module is bad but everything works besides the turn signal. Whe i bump it down the left hand lights up and stays lit does not flash! Nothing happens when i bump or wiggle the switch for the right hand signal.

2. The Ac/wiper pod does not work at all! the back of the pod it lights up and it is getting power on the contacts on the pod but nothing happens when I press any of the buttons for the wipers or the ac controls.

Is there a relay that goes bad for the a/wiper pod I seems the pod is not broken??? Also where is the ground for the pod?

Re: Berlinetta Nightmare

It's pretty common for the contacts behind the buttons to wear out. That would be the first ting I would check especially if it appears to be well used. If you push the buttons aggressively and maybe wiggle them and notice they respond then it is most likely worn contacts. I don't recommend that for the turn signals, but the wiper pod I've pushed pretty hard out of frustration before I finally had the time to take it apart. When your wipers don't work while you're driving in the rain and can't see, it can become a little tense sometimes. lol

IIRC, one time I replaced the wiper module, I forgot to plug it in which caused the wipers to run continuously. This may help you diagnose whether the wiper motor actually works or not since it takes the module out of the equation. Once you know that the wiper motor works you can focus on the module. I can also tell you that because of this your car will be pretty much inoperable until you plug the module back in.
If the buttons are worn, the fix is tedious but relatively easy, and they are more dependable and easy to press.

I do have to warn you that due to its age, the plastic is often brittle which can lead to the stand offs falling apart when you remove the screws. Your best bet is to locate another used pod (should be $15-$20) and take that apart to learn about it and/or see if that one works. The likelihood of buying another that's dependable is pretty slim IMO since they all seem to suffer from the same problems.

IIRC, sometimes the turn signals won't flash if one of the light bulbs is out, or it could also be the flasher module (small round metallic gray piece by the fuse box). The fact that the one side lights up tells me it's probably not the switch at the pod. I would make sure all the bulbs are functioning and try swapping the flasher if you have one around. Also make sure your steering wheel is straight. The wiring connectors at the lights is also a common issue and can lead to an open which would act the same way as a bulb being out.

I'm not sure of your level of experience and if you're comfortable working on cars electronics etc, or prefer to have some things fixed for you. I can give you some tips if you get to the point of taking the RH side apart, I haven't had any reason to do the other side but it should be relatively the same.

I'm not on all the time but if you send a PM I'll notice it right away the next time I log on. Either way it won't be as much of a nightmare if you can break it down into individual parts/issues.
