Fuel guage acting GOOFY!

ok its an 87 Sport Coupe 2.8L auto

for a while i thought it was just stuck like this but i took a sharp turn last night and it went to 3/4 tank then back to way past full, i dont think it has more then 2 gallons in the tank tho...... its been lik that since i bought it, anything that could cause this or a how to fix or what to check????

anyone??? i thought it was teh fuel sending unit but if that was bad wouldnt the gauge never move??

Mine does the same... Ive traced all the wires except where they go thru the rear hump into the tank.. So at least in my case, maybe yours, the sending unit is bad or a loose connection. IIRC full tank means no ground. But dont hold me to that..

Here’s how to check the sender:

Remove the sender wire going to the gage.

Connect an ohmmeter between ground to that wire.

A correct reading will be between zero and 90 ohms.

With 2 gallons in the tank the reading should be much closer to 0 ohms.
