Eliminatating Unecessary Wires???

im swapping engines from a carb'd 2.8 to a carb'd 355 and i notice alot of wires that dont have anywhere to plug into.

the car came with a/c but im not using it with the new engine.

how do i cap/eliminate all the wires i dont need?

im scared that it wont start or something will short out or catch on fire when i go to start it. Is it as simple as capping off the ones i dont need? HELP

Re: Eliminatating Unecessary Wires???

Proper method:
  1. Remove Harness from Loom
  2. Remove tape from wires
  3. Trace wires to nearest junction block, remove wire.
  4. Repeat 3 until all wires are removed
  5. Retape harness
  6. Reloom harness

Improper method:
  1. Trace wire till it hides somewhere in the loom
  2. cut as close to loom as possible
  3. use electrical tape to seal end

I've seen people do it both ways and it can done cleanly both ways. But the proper way is MUCH better.

I am removing my LT1 swap harness from the car shortly and will be de-looming it and removing all of the Autotrans wiring as I converted to a 6spd. I'm also going to be installing some weather pack connectors so I can more easily remove the harness from the car without breaking soldered joints and such. I'm also going to extend the harness so that instead of running most of the wires along the frame rail I can hid them under the fender. I need to install a fuse block in it though, too many power wires coming off the battery to power things that need 12v hot at all times.

Or there's the other proper way - just tie back and hide the wiring you're not using atm. Then down the track, when you decide you want ac or whatever back, the un-hacked wiring is there ready to go. One of my po's did this to a large extent after engine swap, for which I am very grateful.

My vote is for TreeFiidy, that's my method of dealing with extra wires. You just never know what will be throne at you down the road.

Re: Eliminatating Unecessary Wires???

to me ive done both. Tracked them down and cut them out then needed them again down the road for something. I agree till you have driven the car for abit just tuck them away and zip tie them till you know for sure you wanna eliminate themm for sure. You can do it when you have some downtime with the car when your certain and its stupid easy to get the harness out and in
