4th gen dash swap in an 82
I've got an 82 camaro with a carbed 350. The car has no ECM & someone removed part of the wiring harness at some point, i also have a 94 parts car This is my sons first car & he's been reading different threads & is wanting to do a dash conversion. My question is what do I need to do to make the stock gauges operate correctly. Will I need to replace the missing harness & add the ECM. Or will most of the gauges work without a computer?

Well to be honest. I'm working on my sons first car & just happen to have a early 4th gen car as a donor & this is what he wants. All I'm asking is what I need to do inorder to make the cluster work properly. I'm not looking for any opinions as to whether or not it should be done.

Also I think being 15 going on 16 and showing as much interest as someone that been playing with cars as long as some of us I think is awesome & wanting to do custom work & having the parts & place to do it is something I wish I had when I was his age. Building a car is personal. So don't judge others rides unless you want yours judged

I guess the question would be are the gauges going to use the same senders? Will a 92 camaro 700r4 speedo sender work for the 94 speedo on a th350?

Id say you are better off asking around in the interior forum for this. Most times when I see the 4thgen dash swap its followed with an ltx/lsx swap as I think you need the pcm to make the gauges work 100% but i wouldnt doubt you can do it without the pcm if you provide the correct signal to the clusters inputs.Good luck

I did the swap with the same dash. You need the temp and oil senders along with the connectors from the donor car or but new ones. I am sure you must have found the wiring diagrams already to do the swap(hopefully). They just hook up directly to the cluster. The tach, and all the lights, etc.. are just cut and splice together with the old harness off the cluster. The speedo is where its gets creative. I dont believe the electronic sender will work on the th350. I originally had a cable speedo. Dakota digital makes an adapter that goes on the one end of the speedo cable and converts to a electronic signal that then requires their digital signal box (sg5c I believe) to make it work with the gauge. It did work very on mine until I swapped over to a t56, now I just use the signal box. Its actually a pretty easy swap to do, its just the wiring where it gets a bit tedious.

Well, let's just ask this... OP, how much cutting and splicing of wires do you want to do?
IMHO, getting the Dakota Digital stuff is a waste of money when you can get a VSS (well, maybe not the VSS since the TH350 didn't have one available) from just about any Bird, post-86, with the full gauge cluster, and the yellow box that goes with it, for less than a third of what you would need for the DD parts. Only hard part is finding the right speedo driven gear for the VSS and splicing the wires in. :edit: I would tend to think that you could use the VSS used in a T-5 for the TH350 as I know that the speedo gears and cable drive interchange...
Also, you WILL lose the front speakers in the dash swap, unless you plan on using either kick panels (but not with a manual) or making door panel pods.
Just finished the swap (it's not currently installed as I need to do some more cleaning up of the dash shell due to a front end crash and some finish wiring) with a dash from a 93, using the full 4th gen harness, fuse panel, and all of the rest of the stuff. Keep in mind that if you go this route you will need to find a way to either bypass the starter enable relay or have a place to mount a remote ignition lock cylinder for VATS (or just use a resistor to bypass the VATS but then you lose anti-theft capability).
