alternator upgrade on 92 z28

Hey Guys. I am going to install a CS144 into a 92 z28. I noticed that its really simple from the searches i have done. The pigtail on the alternator has only 2 wires while my 88 iroc-z has 3. Will i run into any kind of trouble with the voltage regulator or electronics of the car?

yes it is, but i read that some years on the third gens, u have to add a resistor. From my search up to now, i havent found no one complaining about the cs144 swap on the late years of the third gens.

that is a good upgrade-going from CS130 to CS144 is going from the worst alternators GM built to one of the best

Re: alternator upgrade on 92 z28

I put a CS144 on this spring and cured my alternator trouble. There is a bracket kit you can get which I finally found and then you have to do a little grinding but nothing bad. My factory harness plugged into mine and I ran a #4 audio wire from it to my battery and my lights are brighter. I forgot which car my CS144 came from but do a search since there are several that will work. You have to have a 12 to 6 o-clock bolt pattern alternator for it to bolt up. I will be putting one on my other cars to since I have blown up more 130s than anyone I know. 130 alts are JUNK!!! IMHO. I forgot to mention that my car is a 92 Z vert 305 tpi auto.

The standard thirdgen plug wiring config uses the internal resistor, any issues people would have requiring a resistor to be added should be from them using the plug you metioned, that setup is normally powered through a charge indicator light making the resistor needed to simulate it.

Z28ricer.. that's what i wanted to ear. i bought a brand new pig tail (BWD pt200 aka standard motor products s552) to replace the old pigtail since the wires were showing signs of age from bending.

abray1, im going to take a different approach on the cs144. i got it from a 98 surburban with the 5.7L vortec. the mounting holes are almost the same as the cs130. Check how TexasSilhouette installed his cs144.. no needs for a bracket and still looks OEM.
