Shorted wiring harness?

Hello Everyone,

So I have been working on my 85 trans am for about 3 years haha, and finally got it on the road and inspected. So after the first week of driving it, the car lost power on the highway...

So I was moving the harness around to see what was going on and it was touching the header near the alternator. While i was moving it around it sparked and caught fire but I was able to blow it out .

So now my car is not working again and I don't know what to do with the wires (how to figure out which ones are work and which are not).
- I know that the headlights still work but not the ignition or the windows.

Thanks Andrew

probably blew a fusible link when the short occured-fusible links connect to the positive stud on the starter motor.

Zip Ties. I also use gasket maker and glue them where I want them. They make asbestos looking plug wire cover that works fairly well.

Re: Shorted wiring harness?

Alright so today I worked on pulling the wire up for the fuse able link. And this what I found, the wire total blow apart. The first two pictures are the wire. The last is a fuse able link pep boys suggested.
So now my question is..... should I use this fuse able link and connect the wire or just buy some plain wire and connect them?
Thanks Andrew

Re: Shorted wiring harness?

replaceable fuse will not cut it. you need to get a FUSEABLE link. try google if you are confused on what this is.

Re: Shorted wiring harness?

Great I found the wire at NAPA and installed it over the weekend.
Car started right up, took the T-Tops off and went for a Sunday cruise, awesome!
now I have to figure out about the throttle, sometimes it as a really good push and moves but most of the time it just feels slow.
