Need help with fan wiring
Need help with fan wiring
Ok guys, first off this is my first post so please help me out. here's the story: I bought my 92 z28 about 2 months ago and like any used car, it hasn't been perfect. Lately though, its been having overheating issues which I have deduced to be the fans. They worked at one point in time but have quit. Also, the power to the fan has been routed through the firewall and onto the fuse box and somehow spliced into the fuse connection for my radio. Therefore, in one fell swoop, my radio and my fans are not operational. Please for the love of good, HELP!
Thanks in advance for the assistance

Re: Need help with fan wiring
When the fan was working ,was it running full time when the key on or only when the engine got hot ( as it should )
You need to do more investigating about how the car is presently wired
Is the fan relay still in place and being used or is the fan motor being supplied direct from the fuse box
A PO could have done any sort of shade tree mods to the wiring , you need to tell us how it is currently wired so we can help you
have you put 12V direct to the fan motors to confirm they actually still work ?

Ok, to that first part the fans ran every time the key was turned. Due to that, the car ran relatively cool (between 190 and 210)
I believe the fan motor Is bring supplied with power directly from the fuse box. If I pull that connection and wire it directly to the battery, do you think that will fix the problem? Or would the fans run even with the car off due to the constant power?

Re: Need help with fan wiring
So your wiring has been butchered , fans should only run when engine is up to correct operating temp
Sure , your fans will run all the time , even when you have the keys in your pocket while buying a burger
The correct way is to run the fans through a relay ( how the factory did it )
You first need to see if the fan relays are still installed and if they are wired up or as we suspect they have been bypassed with power coming direct off the fuse box

Ok well, I just put in a higher amp fuse where the radio fuse was and the fans kicked on so I guess its rigged up again. But clearly I can't keep it that way. I'm really not sure how long it'll hold up so if you have any other help for me I'd appreciate it
