Wiring Nightmare!!!

The PO who wired the car must of been either high, stupid or both. The car is an 85 z that originally had a 305 in it. It now has a 350 carb'd which is fine.....for now. I've had a ton of problems with the blinker lights in the dash not working. Recently they stopped working all together dash blinker lights and binkers in general. I found a bad ground that the PO had wired into the blinkers and just ran to the body so i fixed that and now the gauge lights and tail lights stopped working. I have the entire dash apart and i dont see any issues with the wiring. I'm assuming that the dash and tail lights are wired together since they stopped working at the same time. If anyone could shed some light on the subject that'd be great cause i'm getting no where fast. The tail light wiring seems to be fine, the brake lights and blinkers work also. I'm looking for an easy inexpensive fix since it's just my everyday beater at the moment. Sorry for the long post.
Matt

Re: Wiring Nightmare!!!

hahaha no problem. Yes i checked all the fuses but i'm glad you said something because i remember now that the dome lights do not work either. Everytime i try and put a fuse in the ctsy slot as soon as i turn the headlights on it blows the fuse. I've pulled the fuse panel down and i can't see any red flags as to why it would be doing this.

So you have a direct short to ground somewhere on the headlight circuit.
Have to start tracing the wiring on that circuit to locate the problem

Re: Wiring Nightmare!!!

If your talking about a multi meter then yes. The leads on my multi meter broke a while ago, i'll pick some new leads tomorrow and start testing. It's such a rats nest under the dash i'd love to rip out everything i dont need since it's carb'd now but i have no idea what should stay or go. As of right now the only thing that works are the headlights, brake lights and blinkers, the blower motor doesn't even work. The PO had a tornado 2 car alarm wired in also and it definitely wasn't installed by a professional. Your a saint for posting that diagram i've been trying to locate one for an hour now. I gave up for the night since i'm using a lamp for a light and my patience have worn thin. Headed to the bar for a few hours and i'll get back at it tomorrow.

All the circuit diagrams you need to fault find are in the link deadbird posted above

In your case . possibly a better option .
Disconnect everything ( taking pic and notes of what went where ) and then reinstall one at a time to confirm
that the circuit and it's items are sound and working
