305 to a 350 tbi problems

Ok heres the run down I purchased a 1989 iroc as a project for me and my son, because he loves the body style. The car had a 305 in it that had a spun rod bearing along with some other problems. The vats system wouldnt allow the car to crank with the ignition so the previous owner done alot of bypassing and changed the car to a caburator because he didnt know how to repair the vats system. I have since replaced the 305 with a 350 that has a few minor upgrades inside the engine and replaced the ignition that was the problem with the vats system. Now here starts my PROBLEM. THe fuel pump is not priming and the car will not start. The car will start with starter fluid and run for a sec the die.
List of things I have checked:
1. Replaced the fuel pump relay along with the connector(i wired it up according to several diagrams i researched)
2. Fuse at the battery is good.
3. I can jump wires at the fuel pump relay and the pump will send fuel up the lines.
4. Injectors have power at them.
5. I checked the grounds at the back of the passenger head and the wires are actually under one of the bellhousing bolts but are grounded. one is a breaded copper wire the other is a tan and black wire and they attach from the bellhousing bolt up to a stud on the fire wall.
6. I have replaced the fuel. Any help on this would be great as my son is getting pretty impatient waiting to drive the car. THANKS

It sounds like you need to run a wire that powers the fuel pump with the key on through the relay. I went carb on mine and i just wired mine through a separate switch on the center console but through the same relay. The computer is what tells the fuel pump to run because the igniton control module sends a signal that the engine is cranking to the computer thus making it turn on.

I had this problem and it ended up being the fuel pump relay. You said you already replaced that and the connector, so assuming it is correct the problem is probably somewhere else. If you can find a factory service manual for the car it will have an excellent troubleshooting procedure to isolate where the problem is. It will also have every wiring diagram for the car. Check on ebay or the classified boards here for one. They can be expensive, but it is definitely worth the price. I use mine all the time.

Like i said before!!!!!!!!! The computer gets a refernce from the control module in the distributor that turns the fuel pump on when the engine cranks, they do have a 2 or 3 second cycle when the key is just turned on and not cranked as well. No guessing here. Been there done that!

Car has a non factory carb conversion.
Anything in the FSM goes out the window because you have no idea what a previous owner has done / hacked up / butchered/ or removed

Or if the wiring still exists in the engine bay , wire up the factory oil pressure switch that also runs the pump .

Re: 305 to a 350 tbi problems

Well all the original wiring was still under the hood and I deloomed all of it to check for the butchering. The problem with running a switch to the fuel pump is that I would like to keep the car in its original working condition (aside from a few mods to the engine for looks and etc.). Ok where is the oil pressure switch located. I have two wires left over(go figure)that I cant find a place for one is a black and tan along with a black and yellow. These two wires run togther but they were cut and there no connector on the end of them so I have no idea where they go.
