Under dash wiring help!!!!

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what this connector goes to, I have an 88formula 305 TBI, auto trans. Just installed new tank, sending unit and pump. When I kick the key to on...no whine from the pump. Car still cranks over. Losing my mind please help. Took some pictures going to try to post them hope they show up. If you need other pics to help please let me know.
Thank,
James

Re: Under dash wiring help!!!!

Um, that plug isn't the NSS (wrong area completely) or for a starter disable (also has wrong number of wires to be either one).

Either way, that connector has nothing to do with the fuel pump. The pump relay is on the other side of the bulkhead next to the brake booster. Unplug it and plug one of the ones next to it in and see if the pump works then. If not, jump the orange wire to the gray one and see if the pump works, which it should (direct batt feed to the pump).

I'd be willing to bet a dollar it is, according to the wiring diagram I'm looking at, and the countless number of gm cars I've been inside. It shows the manual trans harness is in parallel with an automatic car -- so they probably made em with both connectors. And the clutch switch is usually 2 wires.....

easy to figure out... if the yellow wire is hot only in crank, it's a clutch switch harness.....

or even it used to be a stick car and someone changed it to automatic.....

Re: Under dash wiring help!!!!

GM put the nuetral safety switch harness for an auto in my 89RS, its tucked away by the trans, the clutch safety switch for a manual is on the pedal, this car is an auto and since some if not all stick cars have the pigtail for nuetral no doubt on autos the pigtail is present for the clutch switch.

Definitely not pump related.

Get a wiring diagram, check for constant power at the relay, go from there.

Re: Under dash wiring help!!!!

Yep! It is for the NSS or for the clutch push to start switch.

Re: Under dash wiring help!!!!

Wrong, wrong, and WRONG.

1. The clutch start switch is a 2 PRONG connector. That one is clearly a 4 prong with the 2 middle wires missing. And yes, I have seen both styles of clutch switch, and neither have enough room for a 4-prong plug.

2. NSS connector also has orange/black, dark blue, and green wires (and possibly a tan but not 100% on that). Clearly NOT this one. And, again, IT'S NOWHERE NEAR THE CENTER CONSOLE. Thirdgens didn't have column shift!

3. If the vehicle had VATS, and the connector WAS a clutch switch or starter disable relay, then a wire coming from the relay would be GREEN.

It could possibly have been intended to be a clutch switch, but obviously someone somewhere put the terminals in the wrong connector body.

whether or not it is in the correct connector, THOSE 2 wires are for a signal to a starter. Yellow is from ignition switch, purple leads to starter. AND they are of the proper size as well. I could really care less if they are in a 4 hole connector or not...

if your car cranks ok in neutral and park, tape or wire tie them up somewhere out of sight and forget about them.

yes, the neutral switch on an automatic car is on the shifter in the console.

and, it is also correct that they have nothing to do with the fuel pump.
there are several things that can cause the pump not to run for 2 seconds when the key is turned on. First check at the relay for proper power and grounds and signal. possibly switch it with another known good relay (that's the quick easy way). I can look up the diagrams and have you check things when I can get back to the diagrams at work. I am supposing you have a test light. If not, you need to find someone who does and who knows how to work it. Hope this helps, let me know if you want more info.

Re: Under dash wiring help!!!!

There is another pigtail that connects to those 2 wires that goes to the neutral swicth its just not showing in the pic as either he took it off or was removed. I have one here somewhere I can get a pic of. it is the wiring for neutral switch 100% tho as I have the same set up in my car with the added connector in my car. Its a 5sp harness for sure as it was the only harness to do that as in a auto car they ran it to the middle where the shifter is
