1986 CHMSL relocation
At the moment, I am looking to buy an IROC-Z in the next few years. My current range of model years is 1987-1990. I was wondering, however, how one would go about relocating the CHMSL (third brake light) to the rear spoiler on an '86 model. This would allow me to get rid of the slight drag created by this light, and make the car look better. I'd still prefer to get something with a 350, but it's not a requirement like the spoiler brake light is.

Yea should be easy. I would think if you get a hatch from a 87 or later it would bolt up and they had the light under the spoiler. I bought an aftermarket spoiler for my 86 and it had the holes drilled and tapped for the light under the spoiler. I filled them because I left it on top.
If you did not want to replace the hatch I'm not sure its possible. The light mounts are drilled through the glass so you would have to fill the holes.
I've been going to swap meets for many many years and see the hatches often and a lot of times very cheap since most people do not want to hold on to them due to their size. I have seen many over the years for 5 bucks. Literally.
As for the choice of getting rid of it, it's personal opinion. I like it on top. It's unique to that year so it stands out. I think it looks cool and better than the ones under the spoiler. As for aerodynamic drag, I have not seen wind tunnel tests but I would think there is no gain to remove it. It starts from flush on the window and rounds upwards. Minimal resistance to none. But if it's for astethics that's your call. Personally I like it.

I'm not sure where you are from but coming up on the 26th-28th there is a large swap meet in Jefferson WI and you would probably be able to find one there.
Another option is to find a hatch from 82-85 or 87-92 then get a 87 or later spoiler you can put it on with the light.
