Ignition Control Module Problems
A few years ago I had problems with my Ignition Control Module in my 1991 Trans AM with a 305. I used to go thur about 1 a month. Then I put one in and didn't have a problem until yesterday. I blew one yesterday driving back from DQ and luckily I had one still in the back, so I changed it out and drove home. Well I drove to work this morning, no problems. Then on the way home, I was crusing down the highway, went to go wipe open throttle and the 305 just died. No power, no nothing, so I pulled over and changed the module and off i went.
So what could be problem be?
Something with the disturtor? The ECM? The Coil?
Im going to plug it in to a OBD1 reader tomorrow and see what it says, but what do you guys thing
A new Module is $92, but a new disturtor is $155 BTW

Re: Ignition Control Module Problems
That's a strange one. Are you using dielectric grease when you re-install them? If not this may be the main cause. Could be a bad run of modules, maybe. Are you getting them at the same place or a different one each time? Also if you get the one's with a lifetime warranty you can get them replaced at no charge.

No grease, I'm getting them from all over, one used engine from my house, two from one auto wreaker, one from another, and I went thur three from one parts store
No warranty, the parts store told me after the third one I wasn't getting a new one if it blew

Found that out the hard ($$$) way ,coil was failing but because it was taking the ICM out ,w kept replacing it thinking it was the fault until the coil finally died.new coil , no ICM problems.

Re: Ignition Control Module Problems
You need to use the white grease that comes with the module. No grease will burn them out much faster.
Along with a bad coil, a bad/going bad pick up coil can also shorten the life of the module.

Re: Ignition Control Module Problems
As I was looking under I hood, I remembered that I put a ACCEL Coil a few years ago. But it is brand new, how could it be faulty? Yes that is true, I should use grease, but when you are using used parts from the junk yard, white grease is a bit hard to find

Ya I'm starting to believe it, I'm gunna go to the auto wreaker and get pretty much a new ignition for her, I'm tired of beating around the bush
I plugged in my car and only found a code for my EGR. the code was #32, nothing to do with my ignition

Re: Ignition Control Module Problems
Get a new one from an autoparts store that offers a lifetime warranty. Use the dielectric grease on the bottom side when installing. My experience has been that Oreilly has the best quality for them. I was a manager at AutoZone in college and at least at the time there were major quality control issues with them. To a point it became so well known that memos came down stating that were to test the modules before they left the store so a customer did not walk out with a bad module. I personally had that happen to me.

Re: Ignition Control Module Problems
so i got a brand new AcDelco Module for a parts store, with grease!!!
So on a saturday a few weeks ago, i took out a good old module, and replaced it with the brand new one and used all of the grease that i could get out of the supplied bag.
And I also removed my ACCEL coil and put my factory coil back in.
Its been two weeks and no problems at all (im currently knocking wood).
I guess ive solved the problem, or atleast until something happens i guess
