Starter Wiring

Hey guys,

Need to know what the two wires with the fuseable links are for at the starter.

Starter has 4 wires

Purple - crank signal
Black - 12V from battery
Red - ?
Red - ?

This may help me sort out a problem I'm having with my gauges nightmare starter problems

Thanks

Re: Starter Wiring

Short Answer: They power most of the car.

85 doesn't show to have the 2.8L option, so that's an 86.

Here's the 'POWER DISTRIBUTION' page it refers to

This site has the entire manual for the most part: http://92b4crs.tripod.com/86wiring/86wiringindex.html

Re: Starter Wiring

The 2 red wires carry power to THE ENTIRE REST OF THE CAR, besides the starter motor and alternator (and in certain engine combos, the ECM).

Each one feeds about half of the car. For example the ignition switch has 2 batt inputs off of one of them that it then distributes to switched things, which include the A/C, starter, gauges, radio, and .... ignition; the headlight switch connects to one of them; the brake lights, power seats, mirrors, door locks, interior lights, and all that, each get fed from one or the other; etc.

Therefore if one of the fusible links is bad, about half of the car won't have power.

Hook them up. If they're bad, replace them. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-85621

Re: Starter Wiring

Well I have power windows, headlights, main beam, marker lights, turn signals, tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, interior lights, crank, horn, although a bit weak, blower motor, and all fuses are ok, not blown and there is power to all of them!!

When I tested the fuseable links for continuity they both checked out.

Re: Starter Wiring

Which circuits are powered by the power distribution post behind the passenger side headlight?

Re: Starter Wiring

Does anybody have a wiring chart for for a 89 pontiac firebird? There were 5 wires to go with 3 posts on the solenoid for the starter, 4 of which are big electrical connections. I got sucked back into work and I can't remember where I took which ones off, I wired it back to how I thought it was an nothing happened when I tried to start it (it is a 2.8 liter v6) any help is appreciated

The 4 big ones go to the big terminal on the top of the solenoid (the bottom big solenoid terminal goes to the starter motor itself) and the one small (purple) wire goes to the small terminal marked "S" . The small terminal marked "I" is not used...
