instrument cluster dead after TPI to carb swap?
instrument cluster dead after TPI to carb swap?
Hi all,
Have an '84 Trans AM in which I swapped all body harnesses and drivetrain from an '86 TPI car. Long story short, after about a year of messing around with the TPI and never really getting it to run right, I decided to go back to carb, but leaving all the '86 wiring in the car because it all works correctly whereas the original wiring was hacked up and had a lot of issues.
Well, the carb swap is complete and the car is running great, but problem is none of my gauges are working anymore. Seems as though there's no power to the instrument cluster? When I removed the TPI, I simply unplugged the harness under the right side of the dash and removed it. The harness that connects at the left side of the firewall with the headlight harness is still intact, since it supports the starting, charging and ignition circuits. I know what's required to make the speedometer work again, I have a DRAC module ready to wire up to handle that. Just at a loss as to why my entire cluster is dead, not even the fuel gauge is working anymore. I can only assume that by unplugging the TPI harness under the dash, I broke either a power or grounding circuit for the instrument cluster, that I now need to tie back in?
Another oddity is that there is a dinger that used to only come on if you turned the headlights on with the ignition OFF. That dinger now comes on all the time when you turn the headlights on, regardless of weather the car is running or not.
Does anyone know where I can source a wiring diagram for the dash harness? '86 TPI Trans AM. Any help appreciated.

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe both sides of the GAGES fuse when the key is in the RUN position.
Is there power both sides?
If yes, probe the pink wire with a black stripe at the rear of the dash.
You should see 2 connectors back there while finding the pink wire with a black stripe.
Is there power there?
