Help with Ignition Toggle Switch

I'm trying to wire up an ignition toggle switch and push button start on my project car. The ignition switch has been placed in the run position and disconnected from the ignition cylinder. I wired a toggle switch on the pink wire on the ignition switch. Flipping the switch on does everything that turning the key to the run position normally does. But when the switch is off I can just barely hear a humming and feel vibration from the alternator. When I disconnect the plug on the alternator it stops. Will this kill my battery if I let it go?

im not sure you have the right pink, there are a few under there. i would just intercept the pink at the dist, cut it there and wire your switch in to that. the starter button needs to be rated pretty decent current.

You would use the push button to operate the starter relay ( parts of VATS ); not direct to the starter

Re: Help with Ignition Toggle Switch

I used the thick pink wire on my ignition switch. And of course I'm using the starter relay. My question was about the alternator. Anybody know what's up with that? I thought I had a fairly simple and defective killswitch and pushbutton start without the use of a key worked out until I heard that hum.

You'd have to switch the yellow wire from the ign switch, as well as the pink. The yellow feeds the alt exciter terminal via the resistance wire, and a couple of other things. The way you've got it, the alt sees the ign on permanently.

This diagram's for my '86 TA, but I'm sure yours would be something similar.

Re: Help with Ignition Toggle Switch

the cheap diagrams i was looking at dont show any of the start circuit, and mine didnt have vats fortunately.

and like i said you need to break the pink wire down the line further so you arent disturbing the alt. by the dist.

Re: Help with Ignition Toggle Switch

The humming is the field circuit of the alternator, yes it will drain the battery.
