Need help with wiring mess!

So i bought an 89 Iroc-z with the 305 and 700r4 in it for a little project. It had a problem with the starter not engaging and the fuel pump not kicking in so i was going to try to bypass the vats. The previous owner has all the wiring so mixed up that i have to try getting it all back together first.

VATS does not affect the pump ; only thee starter and fuel injectors.

I suggest you get a factory service manual (FSM ) with the circuit diagrams or at least try to download them so you can identify what goes where.

There is a bracket under the dash that the ECM slides into and is secured by the 34 bolts

When i bypass the vats do i put the resistor before or after the plug? I wasn't sure about that.

Resistor goes into the plug from the harness , not the one from the column

Some people should never be allowed to work on cars. Hope you can save this one. The FSM will be very helpful to you now and in the future.

So after looking at other people's underdash pictures im Prettty sure the plug on the floor goes to the starter enable relay so i found a relay that fits the plug and when i turn the key the relay clicks but the engine still doesn't turn over i can't hear the fuel pump priming either is there a relay for that?

I have power to the fuel pump fuse the previous owner had a switch put into the wire that goes to the fuse that was just writes twisted together so i took out the fuse and got that back to normal. I tried going with 12v straight to the fuel pump port on the plug under the dash and still no fuel pump. Next i took a jumper wire straight to the starter and got it to turn over then the starter locked up on me. Getting sick of this car already and ive only had it for 3 days lol Im thinking about just switching it over to carb at this point to save myself a lot of headache

a carb is not going to fix your "BAD" starter issue. I would start with a Known good starter, you are on the right track "bypassing" everything, make it turn over then we can backtrack from there. obviously it is a total disaster, but not gone.

concentrate on getting the starter to where it will turn the motor over every time you hit the solenoid with power, don't worry about firing it up yet, just tackle this one step at a time. OK

I got the starter to turn it over for about 5 seconds then i stopped engaging it and tried to do it again and nothing so i pulled the starter and bench tested it and it worked fine so tomorrow im going to run new wires to it and check out my grounds.
Now about the fuel pump. My uncle has a 350 tpi motor out of his iroc that he will sell to my pretty cheap so im considering putting it in. From what i've seen my motor needs 11 psi of fuel pressure and his tpi motor needs 40 psi so i will probably need to decide on my engine choice before i buy a new fuel pump?

I like TPI, I have converted several to TPI, but yes I would make a desision then run like H#!! and yes it proly is a ground,, large guage from batt to motor 10 guage from batt to the body and a second to the frame. also check for corrosion at the battery terminals
