Cleaning rear light switch

My car was missing the toggle switch that controls the light in the rear of my 84 Trans Am. It's pretty hard to move back and forth so I wanted to know if anyone had any tips on how to clean the inside of the switch? Do I just shoot some WD40 in it or will that hurt some of the internal mechanisms? Thanks for the help.

Ben
