Re: door locks keep locking???

This is not normal of course. You need to get a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car and help yourself moving forward. I will get you headed in the right direction and it is a matter of trial and testing along the way. One should not take the easy path in fixing a vehicle, such as pull a fuse or disconnect a switch unless it is a necessity to avoid a hazard.

All switches basically break or control the hot wire or power carrying conductor (wire). So why would the car "lock" the door when you close the door? If you would review the "manual" you will find there is a actuator involved with mechanical operating the lock mechanism which is controlled by the rocker or door lock switch. Or remove the hardware and then the door panel and locate the assembly and start testing or troubleshooting why this is happening. It is a cause of a switch, relay or contact making the action happen.

I prefer to offer a fishing pole rather than a fish. It is straight forward once you get started if you have some mechanical and basic electrical knowledge. 3rd Gen's are a 12VDC negative ground system.

Good Luck,
Brian

Sometimes an aftermarket remote starter can trip the locks like that. If you're not sure if you have one, there's usually a sticker visible in the engine compartment when you open the hood. Otherwise look for a box hidden up in the dash and/or extra wiring.

Keep an extra key with you until you get it resolved.

Re: door locks keep locking???

Is it just the drivers side ? or both ?

Odds of both going bad at once are slim. Pull the arm rest off (3 screws), then take the trims off around handle and lock. The lock buttons might be shot, kinda like it has a hair trigger. Can get new ones off ebay like $10. The just plug in. If that's not it, you need to pull the door panel off, get to the lock actuator in lower left, check wires and contact. Sounds like the slam of the door triggers the actuator.

All else fails I think the relay is down behind the kick panel.

Report back to the fix. Also you should put more info in your signature - Camaro or bird ?

It's amlost certainly the lock switch, they do fail in this manner. Good news is they are cheap and easy easy to replace.

Re: door locks keep locking???

To my knowledge none of the 3rdgens had auto locks so the previous owner mustve had an aftermarket alarm or remote starter installed and the feature for passive arm is on.Meaning that once you close the door and the alarm see's that circuit close, it will lock/arm the system. Some models do this after a few seconds of the door being closed, depends on how the installer set it up when it was programmed.

If your inclined to take the underdash panel off on the driver side with a handy light, look for the alarm brain. It may or may not have a logo on it and unplug it till you can have someone professionally remove it.But word of caution...if the alarm was installed and has a starter kill relay built in..it may disable you from starting the car.I dont know your level of automotive electrical skills but it would be an easy fix if you know what to do.
